Uniqlo's Ultra Light Down is the jacket to keep in a bag for unpredictable weather. It uses a high fill-power down in a narrow quilt, weighs very little and packs into the included pouch. It is warm for its weight but not weatherproof.

Wear it as a mid-layer under a shell in cold, wet conditions rather than as a standalone winter coat. The shell is thin, so rough backpack straps and sharp zips can snag it.
