Air fryer buying guide: size, wattage and the features worth paying for
Basket size, wattage and cleaning matter far more than preset icons. A practical guide to choosing an air fryer for a small kitchen.

Air fryers are small convection ovens with a fan and a basket. That is the whole trick. The differences between models come down to usable capacity, how evenly they move air, and how much counter space you are willing to give up.
Capacity: buy for the basket, not the box
Quoted litres include space above the food. A four-quart basket comfortably feeds two people; a family of four usually wants five to six quarts, or a dual-zone model. If you cook for one, a smaller basket heats faster and is easier to clean.
Wattage and preheat
Most full-size models draw 1,400–1,700 watts. Higher wattage recovers temperature faster when you open the drawer, which matters for crisp results. A preheat step adds a few minutes but improves consistency, especially with frozen food.
Cleaning is a daily feature
Dishwasher-safe baskets and a ceramic or non-stick coating you trust are worth more than another preset. Look for a removable crisper plate without sharp corners, and check whether the manufacturer sells replacement baskets.
What we would skip
- App control: useful only if you genuinely plan meals remotely.
- Dozens of presets: most recipes still need manual time and temperature.
- Windowless drawers: a viewing window reduces guesswork, but adds cost and cleaning edges.
Our Ninja AF101 listing is a good reference point for a compact four-quart model. Compare it with larger dual-zone options in the Home & Kitchen department before deciding.
