How to choose noise-cancelling headphones that actually work
ANC specs are easy to inflate. Here is what matters in a real commute, a real office and a real flight — plus the questions worth asking before you pay.

Noise cancelling is one of the few headphone features you can feel within ten seconds — and one of the easiest to oversell. A listing can promise “hybrid ANC” and still struggle with bus engines. The differences come down to microphone placement, processing and how well the earcups seal.
Start with where you will use them
If most of your listening happens on a commute, low-frequency noise is the enemy: engine rumble, air conditioning, train vibration. Over-ear headphones with a strong seal handle this best. For an open office, mid-frequency chatter matters more, and that is where good passive isolation plus adaptive ANC earns its price.
- Flights and trains: prioritise deep low-frequency cancellation and battery life.
- Open offices: prioritise comfort for long sessions and clear call microphones.
- Walking and cycling: consider transparency modes and situational awareness over maximum cancellation.
Ignore the marketing numbers
“Up to 40 dB” rarely describes what you hear across the full frequency range. Look for independent measurements, hands-on reviews and a return window you can actually use. Fit matters more than the spec sheet: glasses, hair and jaw shape all break the seal.
Check the details that age badly
Ear pads are consumables. A model with widely available replacement pads will last years longer than one with a sealed battery and glued cushions. Check whether the battery is replaceable, whether firmware updates are still shipping, and whether the case fits your bag.
Compare the same model across merchants
Headphone pricing moves constantly, and the cheapest listing is not always the safest. Check the seller, the warranty region and the return policy. Our Sony WH-1000XM5 listing shows how we present multiple merchant offers side by side, with the check date attached.
If you are deciding between two models, our comparison tool puts specifications and prices in one table. Nothing is added to your cart — every purchase finishes on the merchant's site.
